Your Google reviews are one of your most valuable business assets. They influence purchasing decisions, improve your local search ranking, and build trust with potential customers. So when your review count suddenly drops, it is understandably alarming. The good news is that in many cases, dropped reviews are recoverable — but the approach depends on why they disappeared.
Why Do Google Reviews Disappear?
Google removes reviews for several reasons, and understanding which applies to your situation is the first step to resolving it.
1. Google's Spam Filter
Google uses automated systems to detect and remove reviews it considers spam or fake. These systems are not perfect, and legitimate reviews are sometimes caught in the filter. Reviews that come from the same IP address, accounts with no other activity, or accounts that reviewed multiple businesses in a short period are particularly vulnerable.
2. Reviewer Deleted Their Account
When a Google user deletes their account, all reviews they left are also deleted. This is permanent and cannot be reversed.
3. Reviews Violate Google's Policies
Reviews that contain prohibited content — including spam, fake content, off-topic content, restricted content, or illegal content — may be removed by Google. This can include reviews that were incentivised (offered in exchange for a discount or reward).
4. Profile Suspension
If your Google Business Profile has been suspended, your reviews may not be visible to the public even though they still exist in Google's system. In most cases, reviews reappear once the profile is successfully reinstated. If your profile is suspended, read our complete guide on how to reinstate a suspended Google Business Profile.
5. Google Algorithm Updates
Google periodically updates its review spam detection algorithms. These updates can cause temporary fluctuations in review counts as the system re-evaluates existing reviews. Reviews lost during an algorithm update may or may not return.
How to Tell If Your Reviews Are Gone Permanently
The first step is to determine whether the reviews are truly gone or simply temporarily hidden. Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard and check your review count there. If the count in the dashboard matches the public-facing count, the reviews are likely gone. If the dashboard shows a higher count than the public listing, the reviews may be temporarily filtered.
Note
Reviews that disappear during a spam filter update sometimes reappear within a few days as Google's systems recalibrate. Wait 48–72 hours before taking action if the drop was sudden and unexplained.
Can You Get Removed Reviews Back?
Whether you can recover removed reviews depends on the reason they were removed:
- Spam filter removal: You can flag these reviews for reinstatement through the Google Business Profile dashboard. Go to Reviews, find the missing review, and use the flag option to report it as incorrectly removed.
- Policy violation removal: These are generally permanent. Focus on generating new legitimate reviews.
- Reviewer deleted account: Permanent. Cannot be recovered.
- Profile suspension: Reviews should return once the profile is reinstated.
- Algorithm update: May return on their own. Monitor over 1–2 weeks.
How to Flag Incorrectly Removed Reviews
- 1Sign in to your Google Business Profile
- 2Navigate to the Reviews section
- 3Click on 'Reviews removed by Google'
- 4Find the review you believe was incorrectly removed
- 5Click 'Request review' to ask Google to reconsider
- 6Provide a brief explanation of why the review is legitimate
Preventing Future Review Loss
The best protection against review loss is to build a large, diverse, and authentic review base. Key practices include:
- Ask customers to leave reviews from their personal Google accounts, not shared devices
- Never incentivise reviews — this violates Google's policies and can lead to mass removal
- Encourage reviews from customers who have a history of Google activity, not new accounts
- Spread review requests over time rather than collecting many reviews in a short burst
- Respond to all reviews — this signals to Google that your profile is actively managed
What About Negative Reviews?
If you are concerned about negative reviews rather than missing ones, the approach is different. You cannot remove a negative review simply because you disagree with it. However, you can flag reviews that genuinely violate Google's policies (fake reviews, reviews from non-customers, reviews containing prohibited content). For guidance on managing negative feedback, see our article on how to respond to negative Google reviews.
The Connection Between Suspensions and Review Loss
One of the most common reasons for a sudden, significant drop in visible reviews is a profile suspension. When a profile is suspended, it becomes invisible to the public — and so do all its reviews. If you have recently had your profile suspended, handling the suspension correctly is the priority. Read our guide on how to handle a Google Business Profile suspension for a step-by-step approach.
