Duplicate Google Business Profile listings are a surprisingly common problem — and one that can have serious consequences. Duplicate listings split your reviews across multiple profiles, dilute your local search ranking, confuse customers, and can trigger a profile suspension. Understanding how duplicates occur and how to resolve them is an important part of managing your Google presence.
How Duplicate Listings Are Created
Duplicate listings can be created in several ways:
- A previous owner or employee created a listing that was never claimed or removed
- Google's automated systems created a listing based on data from third-party directories
- A business owner created a new listing after forgetting about an existing one
- A business moved locations and created a new listing without removing the old one
- A franchise or multi-location business has listings that overlap in service area
How to Find Duplicate Listings
Search Google Maps for your business name and address. Look for any listings that represent the same business at the same location. Also search for variations of your business name — duplicates are not always identical. Check both the map view and the search results panel.
The Impact of Duplicate Listings
Duplicate listings cause multiple problems:
- Reviews are split between listings, reducing the social proof on each
- Local search ranking is diluted — Google may struggle to determine which listing to show
- Customers may find outdated contact information on the duplicate listing
- Google may suspend one or both listings if it detects the duplication
- Your NAP consistency across the web is undermined
How to Remove or Merge Duplicate Listings
Option 1: Claim and Remove the Duplicate
If the duplicate listing is unclaimed, you can claim it and then mark it as permanently closed or request its removal. To claim a listing, go to the listing on Google Maps, click 'Claim this business', and follow the verification process.
Option 2: Report the Duplicate to Google
If you cannot claim the duplicate, you can report it to Google. On Google Maps, find the duplicate listing, click 'Suggest an edit', and select 'This place is permanently closed or doesn't exist'. Google will review the report and may remove the listing.
Option 3: Request a Merge
If both listings have reviews and you want to preserve them, you can request that Google merge the two listings. This is done through the Google Business Profile Help Centre. Note that merges are not always possible and Google makes the final decision.
Important
Do not simply delete a duplicate listing if it has reviews — you will lose those reviews permanently. Request a merge instead.
Duplicate Listings and Suspension
Google may suspend your primary listing if it detects a duplicate. If your profile has been suspended and you have a duplicate listing, resolving the duplicate is likely a prerequisite for reinstatement. For guidance on the reinstatement process, read our complete guide on how to reinstate a suspended Google Business Profile.
Preventing Duplicate Listings
To prevent duplicate listings from being created:
- Claim your Google Business Profile as soon as your business opens
- When moving locations, update your existing listing rather than creating a new one
- Regularly search Google Maps for your business name to check for new duplicates
- Ensure all staff and marketing agencies know not to create new listings
- When closing a business, mark the listing as permanently closed rather than deleting it
Multi-Location Businesses
If you operate multiple locations, each location should have its own separate Google Business Profile. Ensure each listing has a unique address, phone number, and where possible a unique local website page.
